A couple in Prague or: Vacation at Grandma’s house

Bubsi did it! Twice actually! She stayed alone at grandma’s house. With grandma of course, so not alone exactly, but without Mama. And that is a big one!

Without Mama works – sometimes

Leaving Bubsi has not always been easy. To be honest, I cannot stand it when she cries and I am the cause of her distress. While Bubsi is quite the angelic child most of the time, she turns into a proper crybaby when I leave the house without her. Even if she stays with daddy it is not a guarantee she will remain calm. These days, she might even plead with me to stay with her if she notices me preparing to leave. Considering how problematic leaving by myself just for a few hours can be, I was highly skeptical when my mother suggested Bubsi should sleep over for a few days.

Alas, the experiment went without a hitch. Grandma D. and aunt H. took Bubsi to the island in the car. I was on standby at home, ready to pick her up if all hell would break loose. But the call I expected never came. Instead, a supply of happy Bubsi on vacation videos trickled in. Right on first try, Bubsi stayed three whole nights. I was baffled.

A trip just for Papa and me

Then the light bulb went off. If Bubsi would happily stay with my parents for a few days in a row, Papa and I could have a pre-second-baby trip. Or post-first-baby trip. At any rate, a trip, alone, just the two of us. Couple time!

Around that time an old friend of mine who lives on the other side of the world told me she was visiting Europe in summer. M. asked whether we could meet in Prague, as that was as far west as she would come. I talked it through with Papa and my parents, and we set it up: five days in Prague, just Papa, me, and my friend M. on the last day. We got a just in case seat reservation on the train for Bubsi, but it turned out she was having a blast on Norderney. And us adults? Well, we had a good time, too!

Five adult days in Prague

Prague is such a beautiful city. We got lucky with the weather and could explore at length. My first trimester tiredness had passed, and it was glorious to just have to look after ourselves. No carrying or entertaining an energetic toddler. The food choices in the city were glorious and affordable at the same time, a real boon for foodies like us. We would make a different choice with regards to accommodation next time, but it was alright for just sleeping. One evening, we even went on a riverboat cruise featuring live jazz music. And stayed out past midnight! How cheeky 🙂

Meanwhile, Bubsi lover her own vacation too… And came back almost weaned – but more on that another time…
