A day out in Cambridge

Last weekend we visited our friends in Cambridge. Cambridge is one of my favorite places in Britain, and it is only a train ride away from our London home.

Where Papa and I started dating

Four years ago, I visited Cambridge for the first time. My close friend M had been studying there and told me I had to visit. She knew I was into medieval stuff and it would be heaven. Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to make the journey while she lived there. Still wanting to visit, I discovered that another college friend of mine was staying in town over summer. So in 2012, I made Cambridge a weekend trip.

It was the hottest weekend of the summer, and it was gorgeous. My friend took me punting and gave me a city tour. We also hooked up. And guess who that friend is today? Papa, that’s right. He even picked me up from the airport with roses. Which freaked me out at the time as well, wasn’t I just visiting a friend? It sure made an impression, and we started officially dating soon after that first Cambridge trip.

Returning to Cambridge

Although Papa moved away from Cambridge the following fall, we have returned to the city again and again. I love the scenery and atmosphere, both Papa and I have friends there, and it is a significant town in our lives. So before leaving Britain behind for Germany, we had to visit another time.

Once again it is summer, four years im from my first visit, and Cambridge is experiencing a building boom around the station. My friend M has returned to town, but she is out for holidays. Only friend A is still there, and one of Papa’s close friends who couldn’t make it to the wedding. Good enough.

Our day out

It is sunny and warm. Bubsi enjoys the train ride as, well, it is a train. We meet our friends for brunch at Pembroke College. The college is very pretty but the brunch does not impress me. Then again, I am not a fan of the full English breakfast. Beans, really? Bubsi Loves the hash browns, though.

After filling out bellies we head out to Grandchester. The apple orchard is full of people and the line for tea long, but it feels like a mini vacation. Bubsi enjoys the nature and playing with us on the lounge chairs. Not much green in the big city of London, after all. Upon our return at night we are glad we went. We lost a day to pack, but gained some much needed rest. When was your last mini day out?
