When we lived in London, we didn’t really do grocery shopping. We had our groceries delivered to our flat instead. In London, tons of companies offer this service at relatively low cost (delivery fees etc.). Here in Germany grocery delivery is not as well established as it is in the UK. Thus, we sometimes actually do our grocery shopping ourselves now.
Deliveries are so easy
I still recall my joy at receiving my first grocery order in London. The company delivered right within the 1 hour slot I had booked, everything was complete, and the veggies were fresh. Ordering via phone app was a simple process, too. Overall, I couldn’t believe how simple it is. I wondered why I hadn’t ordered groceries earlier.
Imagine: no more forgetting items and having to run back. No more carrying the heavy bags, no waiting endlessly in check out queues or having to ask where that rare ingredient could be found. All that, at almost no extra cost. (Provided one planned ahead and made sure to pick cheap delivery slots. Honestly, avoiding the shopping hassle was worth the extra two or three pounds.)
Shopping in Germany is more complicated
Here in Germany the market for online grocery shopping is much less developed. A few companies offer it but it incurs significantly higher charges. Hidden ones, such as higher prices for the individual grocery items, and overt ones, in the form of higher delivery fees and minimum order requirements. Also, delivery time slots are larger and I have to wait around at home longer.
Therefore, I order much less often here. Approximately once a fortnight instead of weekly. The downside is that the fresh food items we consume a lot usually do not last that long. We run out of veggies, fruits, fresh bread and milk products (yoghurt/milk). So we have to visit the local store in-between to restock.
Bubsi loves it. There is so much to see and grab and want to have. She can push carts and help me put things inside. Her loving it is a good thing, but wow it is even more complicated doing grocery shopping with a toddler than I imagined. Random items tend to be found. But hey, the pics are cute.
